Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine: 5 Products to Toss or Keep

Spring Clean Your Skincare Routine: 5 Products to Toss or Keep

It’s that time of year when we take a long look at all the stuff we have lying around and make tough decisions — don’t forget to include your skincare products in the purge.

But you don’t have to throw out everything

Our expert team at Sanford Dermatology is here to walk you through which products in your bathroom cabinet get the green light, and which should get an eviction notice.

1. Toss: Expired products

We hate to break it to you, but that lotion you’ve been milking since college is probably way past its prime. Skincare products aren’t meant to last indefinitely — most have a shelf life of six to 12 months.

Using expired products can lead to bacterial growth, reduced effectiveness, and skin irritation. You can check the bottle and do a color, smell, and texture test to decide if it’s time to toss it.

2. Keep: What your skin loves

Not everything has to go; we want you to keep anything your skin loves — meaning any product that helps keep it balanced. These products should always have a place in your routine. As long as they haven’t expired, feel free to keep them in the lineup.

3. Toss: What your skin hates

You may have spent some good money on that influencer-backed moisturizer, but if it’s not working for your skin, it’s time to cut it loose. You know a product isn’t right for you if it inflames your skin or leaves it feeling tight, dry, itchy, or irritated.

5. Keep: Sun protection

No skincare routine is complete without solid sun protection. If you’re overwhelmed by all the choices at the store, we can help you find a good option — and it’ll likely do double duty as a moisturizer.

If you have sun protection you love, don’t forget the first step of spring cleaning and check the expiration date.

5. Toss: The harsh and synthetic stuff

Does your skincare product have a bunch of wild, hard-to-pronounce ingredients that freak you out when you look them up online? We say give it the ole heave-ho. This is especially true if the product’s ingredients don’t seem to agree with your skin.
